If you have been thinking of a vacation in Ireland and are a fly fisher, this may be of special interest to you.
There is a part of Ireland that is free of tour busses. The pace of living is slow and the air is fresh and clear. Not far from the coast... there are sparkling clean beaches, quaint little villages and a host of fine restaurants and pubs. The Irish people are welcoming by nature and are a joy to chat with.
A lovely trout stream flows through the fertile farmlands of West Cork. The river has an abundance of insect life and is a fly fishers dream come true. Brown trout are native to this peaceful stream and provide challenging sport when the river is too low for the salmon to run. Atlantic salmon run up the river and are regularly taken when conditions are right. The fish average 6 - 10 lbs but larger salmon in the 16 -18 lb range are often taken.
My guests have exclusive fishing rights to one and a half miles of river... four rods maximum. Day rods may be rented on other sections of the river, giving an additional 10 miles or so of private water to fish. Daily tours of the surrounding countryside and its many points of interest are available to guests at no additional charge.
The schedule is loose and relaxing and the ratio of fishing to touring is up to the guests. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that it's up to the fish.
In past years I have hosted groups that were only interested in touring, but most are happy with a mix of fishing morning and/or evening and touring/eating out in between. Since it stays light late, the evening fishing is usually from 8:30 - 10:00 pm. Of course if a sudden spate raises the river level a few inches you could very well be in for a run of fresh salmon and may want to fish all day.
If you are interested in a relaxing week of fishing and exploring Ireland, off the beaten path, then this may be the trip for you.
