Mossy Creek is a lovely meadow stream flowing through Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley near Harrisonburg. Much has been written concerning Mossy and a search of the internet will find a ton of information regarding the Creek and the trout fishing opportunities it affords.

Most of the flies shown on this site were developed on Mossy Creek.  But a trout is a trout ...he doesn’t know whether he is in Patagonia, Iceland, Michigan, Maine or Mossy Creek. That goes for smallmouth too…maybe even more so. These flies have proven their worth in waters worldwide.
I tie every fly here myself and stand behind each one 100%.

Testimonials:
I went to Greenville this past weekend to fish – beautiful weather.  I caught two of the largest  brook trout that I have ever caught with a quick measure of  over 16 inches – and nice fat fish too.    All fish were caught on the golden retriever – nothing else worked!   Thanks again.  Joanne

Jim, Your retrievers knocked em dead at grand lake stream in Me. The last day was the best day I've had there. The water was fairly high 600 cfs well higher than we've ever seen it.  Dave

Hello I recently purchased a dozen of your golden retriever flies and I thought you might like to know how much fun I had this last weekend fishing one of them. I was at a small lake in the Southern Colorado mountains and it was too windy for fly rod fishing so I got out my spinning rod and a float bubble and tied on a golden retriever. I caught 18 rainbows in two hours and missed at least twenty others. I had smashed the barb and was catching and releasing. Thanks for a great fly.      Rick

Hi Jim - just got back from Maine and your retrievers slayed 'em again; LL Salmon, Smallmouth and some very nice Brookies too.

  Thanks a million,     Tim

I will tell you these flies are terrific.  On my last day fishing at Grand Lake stream I caught 8 large salmon and my husband caught 9 large salmon – needless to say it was a great day fishing!    Dirck also went to Greenville last week.   The Golden Retriever was the only thing that worked and he caught his largest Brook Trout ever plus some salmon – 7 total for half a day fishing.

If you don't have this fly you need to get it. I've been using this fly for 10 years and it is as effective now as when I first started using it. It's my go to pattern by itself or in a tandem setup. It works!

Steelhead Golden Retriever

I opened a fly shop in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley near Mossy Creek in the early '90’s. The business hours that I set allowed me to fish practically every day during prime time. After selling my shop I concentrated on guiding and instructing fly fishers on Mossy Creek and other nearby waters.
I am not an “expert”…I’m just a guy who loves to fish and I have been at it for 60 years.
Flies for Mossy Creek:
Each year I host trips to Iceland and Ireland for trout, salmon and arctic char. I no longer guide locally but am still tying and offering my patterns for sale. Over the years I have found or developed a number of killer patterns.

NEW! ...tying kits and materials
Over the years I have written a number of articles that have been published in fly fishing journals. I'll put them up as I find them...check back often.
I hope you enjoy this website...please email or call with any questions you may have regarding my flies or trips
.
